Is Aging an Accident of Evolution?

Stanford University researchers argue against the prevailing theory of aging--that aging is the result of unavoidable chemistry caused by the build up of a life time of wear and tear. Their argument is that aging is driven by changes in regulatory genes which, if true, would theoretically mean aging could be stopped If aging is not a cost of unavoidable chemistry but is instead driven by changes in regulatory genes, the aging process could be slowed down, or even stopped.
